FAQ

Questions and answers.

Straight answers for serious applicants.

Who is the scholarship for?

Full-time undergraduates at a four-year college or university in the United States who are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents, and who are serious about building a business. We are not looking for a particular major or background. We are looking for genuine entrepreneurial drive and a real idea you intend to pursue.

How much is the award, and how many are given each year?

The Foundation awards two scholarships of $2,500 each year, one in the winter cycle and one in the fall cycle. Funds are paid by check directly to the recipient, not to the school.

When are the deadlines?

The winter cycle closes December 31, and that recipient is notified by February 1. The fall cycle closes June 30, and that recipient is notified by August 1. Apply to whichever deadline comes next.

How are recipients selected?

Selection is driven by your personal essay. We read for clarity of thinking, a specific and credible idea, and evidence that you have the drive to execute it. Patrick Horsman personally reviews the finalists and calls every winner.

What should the essay cover?

Write a one to two page essay that answers four questions directly: why you want to become an entrepreneur, why you believe you will succeed, what your edge is, and what your business idea is. Be specific and be honest. A clear, concrete answer beats a polished but vague one every time.

What makes a strong application?

The strongest applications show, rather than tell. They describe a real problem and a specific idea for solving it, give concrete evidence that the applicant can execute, and are honest about their edge. Write plainly, respect the reader's time, and make us believe you would start this with or without the scholarship.

How do I submit my application?

Write your essay, then in the same document add your full name, contact information, school, major, expected graduation date, and current GPA. Save it as a single PDF and email it to Scholarship@PatrickHorsmanGiving.com. Winners are notified by phone and email.

Is there an application fee?

No. There is never a fee to apply for the Patrick Horsman Foundation Scholarship.

Can I apply more than once?

Each award is a one-time grant. We generally prefer to support new applicants each cycle, but you are welcome to apply again in a future cycle if you were not selected.
